Gropparello Castle dramatically towers like an eagle's nest above a fierce rocky landscape and unravel itself slowly to the visitors, through glimpses of breath-taking scenic view. Rooms decorated with sober elegance, majestic fireplaces, windows overlooking the ravine that softly lighten the chambers through their glasses, all these details recreate the atmosphere of a dreamed “medieval castle”. Built on a high peak of volcanic rock and surrounded by a cliff of geological interest, the castle is an example of a typical medieval stronghold, built to control the only access to Vezzeno valley.
The structure was probably built on a pre-existing roman castrum that was meant to command the road through Vezzeno Valley toward Velleia. The presence of a sculpture that resemble an altar on the top of the rock mass, has lead historians to think that prior to the roman castrum was an ancient celtic settlement. Thanks to its outstanding landscape and its unique location Gropparello castle holds the charm of the ancient fortifications. Its foundations were cut from living rock, as can be clearly seen inside the courtyard or glimpsing through the floor in the cellars.
The access to the castle was granted only through one of the two drawbridges: a smaller one for pedestrians and a larger one, used only for carriages and by men on horseback. A bass-relief hanging over the entrance depict the famous legend that inspired many medieval and renaissance artists: Saint George slaying the dragon to save the beautiful princess.
